ATHLETE INJURY AMENDMENTS GENERAL SESSION STATE OF UTAH Chief Sponsor: Paul Ray Senate Sponsor: ____________ LONG TITLE General Description: This bill shields an amateur sports organization from liability for injuries under certain circumstances. Highlighted Provisions: This bill: ▸ shields an agent of an amateur sports organization and the organization from liability for injuries to an athlete if the organization has a protocol for injuries in place and the protocol was followed and documented at the time of the injury. Money Appropriated in this Bill: None Other Special Clauses: None Utah Code Sections Affected: ENACTS: 26-53-501 , Utah Code Annotated 1953 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah: Section 1. Section 26-53-501 is enacted to read: 26-53-501. Liability. An amateur sports organization or an agent of an amateur sports organization may not be held liable for injuries or future medical conditions related to an injury suffered by an athlete during a sporting event sponsored by the amateur sports organization if: (1) the amateur sports organization has a policy in place consistent with this chapter; and (2) the policy was followed and documented at the time of the injury.
